Man takes girlfriend, two kids hostage in police standoff (Clarksville, Tennessee)

Police are "unclear" about whether KARL BANKS is the biological father. Maybe he is the sperm donor, maybe he's just another useless boyfriend. At any rate, he pulled a classic Daddy Drama here--holding his girlfriend and two kids hostage in a police standoff.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A suspect has been taken into custody after a standoff with Clarksville police. Officials said three people, including his girlfriend and two children, were barricaded with the man.

The incident started at about 1:40 a.m. Friday at the Hickory Trace Apartments in Clarksville. Officials said family members called police about a domestic related situation.

Police said when they responded suspect Karl Banks, age 30, refused to come out of the home. He was holding his girlfriend and two children. It was unclear if Banks was the father of the children.

Police closed Old Russellville Pike near Hickory Trace Road and evacuated several neighboring home.

The 30-year-old women and a 12-year old child were able to get out of the home early on. A 2-year old was still inside. Police were able to convince Banks to let that child out around 5:30 a.m.

Once Banks was alone in the residence, police used a chemical agent and a distraction device to disorient him while SWAT team members wearing full protective gear entered the home.

Banks was finally apprehended just before 6:30 a.m. Police secured the scene and allowed residents to return to their homes.

"Our tactical unit went in – just like we're trained to do to bring somebody out safely – and he is out. He is unharmed. Nobody was harmed and at the end of the day that's a good thing," said Officer Jim Knoll with the Clarksville Police Department.

"We couldn't get him to come out on his own. We couldn't negotiate him out, so our tactical unit went in."

Family members at the scene were visibly upset by the whole situation. They said the situation just went too far.

Banks was booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Police planned to charge Banks with domestic assault, but more charges were possible.
