Police arrested an Oklahoma City man accused of kicking one of his sons in the stomach for performing poorly on his spelling assignments in school.

Jacob Dolin Parnell, 29, was arrested on complaints of child abuse Thursday after his sister told police he has been abusive toward his two sons lately.

Parnell told police “he doesn't abuse his children, but he does admit he is very hard on both his boys,” according to the police report. He said he makes them do wall squats when they do something wrong.

He said he knows he has anger issues but doesn't hit his children, according to the report.

Police said the mother of the children reported the child abuse, and officers responded to the house in the 1100 block of N Woodward Avenue Thursday about 4:30 p.m.

Parnell's sister said she witnessed the abuse and told officers he has been abusive toward both of his sons for the last week. She said he kicked one of them in the stomach out of anger when he found out the boy was messing up on his spelling work at school.

When interviewed, one of the boys said his father “gets very mad at me when I do bad at school or if I talk too much at home.”

The boy said his father kicked him in the stomach when he was getting his spelling words wrong and would punch him in both of his sides if he continued to get them wrong.

Parnell's sister said he has a severe anger problem and scares her sometimes when he gets mad, according to a police report. She told officers her brother has never hit the boy's mother but has been extremely hard on the children lately.

Police said his sister told the mother of the boys after she witnessed Parnell grab one of the boys by the ear and throw him hard against ramp railing at their house. She said he also kicked his 3-year-old son in the back, telling him to get out of the way, according to the report.

The child's face went face first into the ground, causing his lip to bleed, the woman told police. She said Parnell is constantly pushing the younger boy to try and get him to stop crying.
