A 23-year-old Suffolk man pleaded guilty Monday to malicious wounding, child abuse and other charges stemming from the shooting of his 3-year-old son during what police said was a confrontation with the boy's mother.

Michael Anthony Goodman Jr. faces up to 48 years in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 4, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Marie Walls said.

Goodman was arrested June 15 after the shooting at the home of the boy's mother, Ashley Williams, on White Marsh Road.

Police at the time said Williams had just arrived with her two children and a male companion. Goodman got into an argument with Williams in the foyer of the apartment building and fired in the direction of the male companion, police said. The bullet struck the child in the shoulder.

Police said Goodman and the other man took the child to the hospital. The child was released several days later and has since recovered.

Goodman pleaded guilty to malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding, child abuse resulting in serious injury, child abuse with disregard for life and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Two other charges were dropped in a plea agreement, Walls said.
