Mom, two kids found murdered; dad being "questioned" (Lockport, Louisiana)

When the police say they find no records of domestic violence, this means exactly nothing. MANY women do not report, for many reasons. Especially if it's a small town where Daddy's back on the streets almost immediately.

The daddy being "questioned" in this triple homicide is CARLOS NIEVES, JR.

LOCKPORT, La. -- As emergency crews tackled a fire at an apartment complex in Lockport early Sunday morning, they soon realized they had stumbled upon a crime scene.

Inside one of the units, they found the bodies of 29-year-old Jacqueline Nieves and her two daughters, 6-year-old Gabriella and 1-year-old Isabella.

"It appeared that the fire had been intentionally set, and that the three victims had been, perhaps, killed by at least one stab wound on each of the bodies," said Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre.

According to investigators, the children’s father, Carlos Nieves, Jr., is now being held for questioning.

Authorities said it was Nieves who first reported the fire.

"This is a potentially complex homicide, which could ultimately result in someone being charged with a capital offense. So, our goal is to be very precise and methodical, and not rush to judgment," Webre said.

Police set up a fairly large perimeter around the apartment complex Sunday, as the investigation continued throughout the day.

For neighbors, it was an unfamiliar scene.

"It's unreal," said one woman, who didn’t want to be identified. "Lockport is a very quiet town. Everyone pretty much knows everyone in the area."

According to police, it’s been nearly four decades since Lockport’s last murder.

Now, the community mourns the loss of two children and their mother, who was a few days shy of her 30th birthday.

"It's a horrific crime when children are involved, particularly when young children are involved, and a family is involved," Webre said.

According to investigators, there are no records of any domestic incidents involving Carlos and Jacqueline Nieves, who had been married seven years.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact causes of death.
